What is Doom Metal?

Doom metal is a specific style of heavy metal music that is defined by its incredibly slow, heavy, and atmospheric sound. While most other metal genres focus on high-speed energy and aggressive technical playing, doom metal does the exact opposite. It slows the music down to a deliberate crawl, using heavily distorted, low-tuned guitars to create massive chords that ring out and fill the room with a profound sense of physical weight.

The atmosphere of doom metal is deeply rooted in dark, melancholic themes. Instead of the typical rock-and-roll subjects of partying or fast cars, doom metal lyrics and imagery focus on topics like dread, isolation, mythology, the occult, and the inevitability of death. It plays out much like a gothic horror movie set to music, designed to make the listener feel a sense of epic sorrow or haunting suspense.

The genre traces its roots all the way back to the heavy, ominous riffs that Black Sabbath pioneered in the 1970s. By the mid-1980s, underground bands officially gave the style its name, which has since expanded into several subgenres. Today, it ranges from traditional, melodic styles with operatic vocals to incredibly slow, crushing varieties that sound like a dark funeral march.
